Everything we do at GAVA is community-driven and resident-led.

Rather than simply delivering programs, GAVA provides opportunities for residents to engage and take ownership of efforts for their built environment, health promotion, economic development and anti-displacement.

Resident-led teams work with GAVA organizers to identify and lead efforts to improve nutrition, increase access to safe physical activity, increase support for Austin’s Early Childcare infrastructure, support climate resilience and neighborhood stability, and advocate for equitable policies and practices in their communities.

Developing leadership at every step:

GAVA’s work centers on “people before programs.” We invest in leadership, networks, relationships, and systems change, knowing that program relevance and sustainability depend on the people and partners in our coalition. We build trusting relationships by engaging one on one and with community members with shared concerns or goals. We listen, develop leadership skills, and facilitate spaces to convene, create action plans, and to advocate for their needs to make things better for them and their communities.

GAVA’s Organizing Model

  • GAVA uses community organizing to improve equitable access to healthy lifestyles by engaging and developing community leaders who identify, initiate, and lead efforts to reduce barriers to healthy living and increase stability in their neighborhoods.
  • GAVA’s community organizing approach sets goals with input from local residents who have lived experience. These residents work together with trusted experts to create strategies and plans that make changes in their neighborhoods and across the City of Austin.
  • GAVA frames all of our projects based on resident feedback, using community organizing strategies to influence the Social Determinants of Health.
